A basic income for a complex society: Introduction

Proposals for a Universal Basic Income (UBI) have long history, but surge of interest since the global financial crisis suggests connection to growing inequality and insecurity. The pandemic intensified through explosion in use cash transfers. This special issue arose from pre-pandemic debates among Australian sociologists connecting around UBI emerging patterns insecurity stemming Australia's precarious labour market expensive housing market. Those discussions broadened reflect on colonial history patriarchal economy, potential recognise more diverse contributions values. Evolving Covid crisis, now incorporates remarkable alternatives that were, briefly, made possible. articles both scepticism optimism towards UBI, all reveal how basic income can provide useful lens sociology – simple tool responding an increasingly complex society.
